HOW TO DYE YOUR BEARD & GET IT RIGHT
Whether covering a grey beard or fixing a patchy mustache, dyeing your beard can make or break your style. But only if you get it right, and trust me, you’ll know when you get it right! Your beard will look fuller, completely natural and you will receive plenty of compliments.
Still, there are plenty of men out there who don’t know how to apply beard dye correctly, ultimately ruining naturally beautiful beards and walking around with the so called “shoe polish beards”. It is unfortunate to see how many guys fall into the trap of the fake looking beard, but hey, the good news is that a better beard may be as simple as reading the rest of this article and choosing the perfect beard dye for you!
There are many variables to consider when dyeing your beard including what type of beard dye to use, which color to choose and what beard dye application works the best for you. Let’s cover these three points in more depth so when you are ready to dye your beard you will do it like a pro!

CHOOSING THE BEST BEARD DYE
In general, there are permanent and temporary beard dyes. Permanent beard dyes stain hair and thus can last for days and even weeks. “Permanent” in this case, only means that you don’t have the freedom to decide when you want to remove the beard dye. Temporary beard dyes, on the other hand, use pigments instead of dyes and can last anywhere from one to three days.
We here at VOLT don’t recommend using permanent beard dyes unless your beard is really long. This is for several important reasons:
- The application is a messy process taking 20-40 minutes and it requires gloves.
- You will have to wait about 10 minutes for the color to finally kick in and then rinse it off.
- You can’t customize a permanent beard dye because you can’t see the color of your beard until AFTER you apply it…permanently.
- Even though the color is permanent, your hair grows as fast as 0.5 inches per month. So, every week 1/8 of an inch of your new hair will show a different color than the rest of your dyed hair. For this reason, most men using hair dyes end up dyeing beards weekly and spending as much as 4 hours per month doing so (not including the cleaning of stains).
In the end, after all the effort and painstaking time you put into your beard, the results typically resemble the “shoe polish beard” that I mentioned previously because beard dyes transform your hair into one solid color. To make matters worse, most beard dyes use chemicals such as ammonia, ppd or toluene that can cause serious skin reactions and even permanent scarring. This is not something to play around with specially when using dyes on your face.
We here at VOLT believe that temporary beard dye/beard color is the way to go. It takes a minute (sometimes less) to apply, there are no harsh chemicals to deal with and it gives YOU the opportunity to be in full control of the application and the final look. You can apply it where you want it, how you want it and regulate the intensity of the color. Additionally, the best temporary beard dyes, such as Volt Instant Beard Color, dry right away providing a smudge and water resistant finish that can last up to 48 hours.
Let’s do some simple math here because this is a good point. Permanent beard dyes take an hour to apply and wash off, and most men need to do this 3-4 times a MONTH to maintain a natural looking beard as their hair grows. Temporary beard dyes, like VOLT Beard Color last for up to 2 days and take a minute to apply. That means that every month, you could spend 4 hours of your time to apply permanent beard dyes, or spend 15 minutes a month to apply temporary beard color that is more natural-looking and customizable.
WHICH COLOR TO USE FOR MY BEARD DYE?
There is no perfect guide on what shade of beard dye would work the best for your beard. The truth is, that unless your hair is black, typically for most men, beard and hair color do not match perfectly. For example, I have dark brown hair, yet my natural beard color always was more reddish-brown. For mostly grey beards I recommend finding a beard dye shade that matches either your hair or your eyebrows. If you have very little grey in your beard or if you have a patchy beard get the beard dye that will match your existing beard color. A good tip is that it’s always better to start with one shade lighter than you think!
HOW TO DYE YOUR BEARD LIKE A PRO
Ok, now it is time to dye your beard! Naturally, we will be using Volt Instant Beard Color, which is one of the quickest, most natural-looking, and safest beard colors on the market that works especially well on short to medium size beards.
After selecting your shade it is important to come up with a game plan when it comes to dyeing your beard. Will you be going with the full-coverage, salt and pepper or highlighted look? Everyone has different needs and likes and thus selecting the style is entirely up to you. However, and as always, there are two easy rules to follow that will guarantee the best beard dye application results:
- Keep it looking natural and do not overdo it.
- Make sure that the style complements the rest of your look.
Once you’ve chosen your style (and made a plan) it’s time to prep your beard really well! You can use Beard Prep & Clean or Beard & Face Cleanser and then dry your beard completely to prepare for color. Next, proceed with the application following these 5 simple steps:
- Shake the color really well for at least 30 seconds prior to the application.
- Start in one section by brushing the color in light layers and in the direction of your hairs growth.
- Move to the next section and let the previous dry before adding more color.
- Check your neck and face and use the Prep & Clean liquid to remove any unwanted color.
- Complete the look by touching up your eyebrows (if needed).
- Use Volt Lock to add natural shine and extra color protection (if needed).
Hopefully with this article you are well on your way to finding and rocking the best beard style and color that you possibly can! Overall, growing a beard is an accomplishment, and that accomplishment (and beard) should never be put in harms way due to using the wrong beard color for your needs!
