One of the most common questions that we get here at Volt Grooming is “How long does it take to grow a beard?” Although this question has quite a tricky answer, we’ll do our best to answer it for you today in detail!
Beards, and your ability to grow one, largely depends on a few key factors such as:
- Your genetics
- Testosterone levels
- The way you maintain your beard
- Your diet
- many more…
Therefore, beards are an extremely personal experience that will vary by individual. We’ll be breaking down the question “How long does a beard take to grow?” into 2 main parts: The average realistic rate of beard growth and the perspective based length of time your beard will take to grow.

How Fast Does Beard Hair Grow?
On average, facial hair grows at a rate of half of an inch per month. That being said, keep in mind that this is just the average. Depending on your genetics, you may be able to grow your beard at a rate that is slower or faster than this, or possibly, not at all.
It’s the unfortunate truth that some men out there simply have trouble growing their beards out. But, if you are one of the lucky men out there who can, you’re realistically looking at a beard growth rate of .5 inches a month.
Take Dan’s beard (as seen above in the video). His beard is roughly 12 inches long. When we divide this length by the average beard growth rate of .5 inches a month, we can calculate that it took him close to 2 years to grow the beard he wears today.
So, whenever you’re curious about how long it takes to grow a beard, you can use the average to calculate it.
How Long Will It Take YOUR Beard To Grow
We’ve talked about the realistic/scientific answer, so now let’s talk about the perspective-based answer to the question “How long does it take a beard to grow?”. Obviously, not everyone thinks of the same thing when they imagine what a beard looks like. You may be envisioning a long fully-grown beard like you see on Dan C Bearded, but someone else may envision a short minimalist type of beard that is synonymous with “corporate.”
Therefore, the answer to your question really depends on your perspective. What kind of beard do you want? Depending on your answer, you may be able to grow your desired beard faster or slower relative to others. So, here’s how you can answer your own question and calculate the amount of months it will take your beard to grow.
- Find a beard that you like and make it your goal length.
- Take the length of that beard and divide it by .5 inches.
For example, let’s say I like the look of the beard in the image below. I found this image by typing in “1-inch beard”
I know that, due to the average growth rate of .5 inch/month, this beard will take two months to grow out fully if I grow facial hair at the average amount. However, if you decide to grow out your beard and hit your goal length, you’ll be able to measure your own unique growth rate after about a month and determine how long it will take you, specifically to grow the beard that you’re aiming for.
So, overall the answer to the question “How long does it take a beard to grow?” is “it depends”. If you grow out your beard hair at the average rate of .5 inches a month, it should take you 2-6 months to grow a beard that is a few inches long, depending on the length of beard you’re aiming for.
